The University of Aix -Marseille ( frz: Université Aix -Marseille ) is the largest French-speaking university and recent French university. It was founded on 24 August 2011, and was created from the merger of three previously existing universities. The university facilities are mostly located in the cities of Aix -en- Provence and Marseille.

The University of Aix -Marseille is located in the heart of Provence, mainly in the two cities of Marseille and Aix -en- Provence. She has five major campuses: Aix -en- Provence, Marseille Étolie, Marseille Centre, Marseille Timone, Marseille Luminy. The university has numerous partner universities worldwide, alone 375 Erasmus partner universities. Therefore, of the 72 000 students enrolled in the year 2013, almost 1/7 internationally. The University is organized into five subject areas:

  • Art, literature, languages, humanities and social sciences
  • Law and Political Sciences
  • Business and Management
  • Health Sciences
  • Science and Technology

History

The university was founded in 1409 by Louis II of Anjou, Duke of Provence. In 1791, the university was in the wake of the French Revolution - like everyone else in France - resolved. The scattered over the whole urban area Faculties and Institutes were separate entities. From the late 19th century to the individual faculties were merged back to the University of Aix -Marseille, but already separated by a law on 12 November in 1968 in three different devices: In 1970 Aix -Marseille I ( University of Provence ) and Aix- Marseille II ( 1994 University of the Mediterranean ). 1973 followed by the establishment of Aix -Marseille III (2004 university Paul Cézanne ), so that three universities existed with the name of Aix-Marseille. As of 2004, the three universities strengthened their cooperation and focus on a common strategy for the use of synergy effects and to the development of courses on offer. In June 2007, universities have decided to plan to team up to found the University of Aix -Marseille. The foundation was finally through a regulation 24 August 2011, which entered into force on 1 January 2012. As the first president of the University of Yvon Berland was elected on January 3, 2012.
