Aizoanthemum

Aizoanthemum hispanicum

Aizoanthemum is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ).

Description

The species of the genus Aizoanthemum grow as annuals, herbaceous plants with erect to spread-out, rarely prostrate branches. Your young internodes are older occupied with elongated papillae with remotely located, shorter papillae. Remember Dries papillae appear as flat scales. The change-constant leaves are only in the distal part of the inflorescence sometimes on opposite sides. These are tapered oval and often extended to their base out. Sometimes a petiole is present. The papillae are low and inconspicuous or more prominent.

The flowers are in large inflorescences, which comprise more or less the whole plant. Most of them are exclusively branched distally. Your perianth is papillat outside and inside greenish, white or yellow. The Perigonzipfel are all more or less the same length. There are a medium-sized ovary and numerous flat at their base stamens present. The more or less spherical or columnar capsule fruits are five to zehnfächrig. Their valves open completely through parallel, elongated spring strips, which extend from the center of the fruit up to the valve cusps. The fruits contain dark brown to black, kidney-shaped to round, concentrically ribbed seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The disjunct distribution of the genus Aizoanthemum extends a hand from southern Angola to the north of Namibia. On the other hand, it extends from the Canary Islands and southern Spain along the southern coast of the Mediterranean to Syria, Armenia, Iraq and Iran. The plants usually grow in coastal areas on sandy soils.

The first description was in 1957 by Hans Christian Friedrich. The genus Aizoanthemum include the following types:

  • Aizoanthemum dinteri ( Schinz ) Friedrich
  • Aizoanthemum galenioides ( Fenzl ex Sond. ) Friedrich
  • Aizoanthemum hispanicum (L.) H.E.K.Hartmann
  • Aizoanthemum mossamedense ( Welw. ex Oliv. ) Friedrich
  • Aizoanthemum rehmannii ( Schinz ) H.E.K.Hartmann
