Aj Ne' Yohl Mat

Ajen Yohl Mat ( † August 8 612) was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Mayan city of Palenque. He reigned from January 1, 605 until his death.

Origin and family

Both the birth and the family origin of Ajen Yohl Mat are unknown. It is generally believed that he was a son of his predecessor, Yohl Ik'nal. During his reign, a Janaab Pakal played a significant role. Hardly anything is known about him. He could have been another son or a husband of Yohl Ik'nal.

Reign

Ajen Yohl Mat ascended the throne on January 1, 605 ( Long Count 9.8.11.9.10, Calendar Round 8 Ok MUWAN 18 ), two months after the death of his predecessor Yohl Ik'nal. The exact position of Janaab Pakal is unclear, it may be ruled jointly with Ajen Yohl Mat

On an inscription from the Temple of the Inscriptions in Palenque are for 13 June 606 ( 9.8.13.0.0, 5 Ajaw 18 sec) celebrations of the end of a calendar period survived. Ajen Yohl Mat was during his reign attain far-reaching power over the neighboring town of Santa Elena and sat there apparently a ruler a. On April 4, 611 however Palenque suffered a further severe military defeat by Calakmul. As already twelve years before the enemy forces penetrated to the center of the city, this time under the direct leadership of the ruler of Calakmul " loop line ".

In this military defeat seemed to follow in Palenque also a dynastic crisis. Janaab Pakal died on March 4, 612 ( 9.8.18.14.11, 3 Chuwen 4 Wayeb ) and Ajen Yohl Mat on August 8, 612 ( 9.8.19.4.6, 2 Kimi 14 mol). He probably had no children. Im a person succeeded to the throne, which is referred to as Muwaan Mat whose identity but so far could not be clearly established.
