Ajmalicine (syn. raubasine ) is an indole alkaloid from the roots of Indian snake root ( Rauvolfia serpentina ). In Germany, the active ingredient is not commercially available.
Pharmacological properties
Ajmalicine has antihypertensive properties and is therefore medically, used as a single agent in arterial hypertension, especially in arrhythmia. The maximum single dose is 50 mg, the maximum daily dose of 400 mg. Overdoses lead to bradycardia, ataxia, and convulsions; additionally massive gastrointestinal complaints can be reported. In children, the smallest known toxic dose ( TDLo ) is 12.5 mg / kg.
