Akaflieg München Mü28

The Akaflieg München Mü 28 is a glider student Fliegergruppe Akaflieg Munich, which is designed to be used in aerobatics. It was in his time next to the LO 100 one of the few gliders that were uncompromisingly optimized for aerobatic maneuvers.

History

Since the flight characteristics of the then customary pattern LO 100 for glider aerobatics in some attitudes - particularly in inverted flight - were unsatisfactory, the students summarized to develop the decision, a private glider for aerobatics end of the 1970s. The Mü 28 was on August 8, 1983 will begin their first flight and had to reach speeds of up to 400 km / h in the course of flight testing. This makes it probably the fastest glider in the world.

Construction

For simplicity, was resorted 303 Mosquito in the construction of large parts of the glass wings. These included not only the body but also parts of the cockpit, the control and the landing gear. Furthermore, also comes from the tail of the Scheibe SF 34 but this had to be enhanced accordingly in order to survive the projected load factor of / - 10g.

In the wings was decided to use a symmetrical Wortmann profile that has the same properties in both the normal and in inverted flight.

A particularly interesting aspect of the mu 28 is the Wölbklappenautomatik, which had been developed in 1973 with support from the German Research Foundation of the Association of Flight Sciences Aachen not actualized for their project FVA -21. For each flight condition, there is a function of wing loading and airspeed optimal Wölklappeneinstellwinkel. Since the continuous correction of the angle represents an additional burden impossible for a pilot during the flight, an automatic control system was developed which changes the Wölbklappeneinstellwinkel depending on the angle of attack of the aircraft. This gives the optimal Wölbklappeneinstellung Mü 28 its very good flight characteristics for aerobatics.

Sporting successes

Especially since the mid- 1980s were achieved with the mu 28, which is only flown by members of the Akaflieg Munich, many sporting successes in championships, world championships and the Salzmann - Cup. Due to the advent of other modern Glider aircraft such as the Swift S- 1, the success took off, but even 20 years later, good results are still flown with the mu 28.
