Akbarpur (Hindi: अकबरपुर, Urdu: اکبر پور; Akbarpur, [ ʌkbʌrpʊr ] ) is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with around 110,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is located 60 kilometers southeast of Faizabad and 140 kilometers north- west of Varanasi in the eastern part of the Awadh region ( Oudh ) on the banks of the river Tamsa ( clay ). The city is the administrative center of the district Ambedkar Nagar.

Akbarpur is named after the Mughal emperor Akbar. During its reign in the 16th century, the local ruler Mohsin Khan erected a fort, which is only a ruin today, and a bridge over the Tamsa in Akbarpur.
