Akçe

Akçe ( Ottoman آقچه, IA akçe, Akça, Turkish akçe, Akça ) is the name for the first coined by the Ottomans and over many centuries in circulation silver coin. The coin was first minted during the reign of Sultan Orhan I ( 1326-1359 ). The coin was probably coined by the Komnenen in Trebizond Asperon as a model. The coin is approximately 1.2 g in weight with a fineness of 900 and has a diameter of about 18 mm. For centuries, the coin is the backbone of the Ottoman monetary system. Until the beginning of the 17th century, but its weight decreases gradually to 0.33 g, with 13 mm in diameter. In the same century also new coins coming out (3 akçe = 1 Para, 40 Para = 1 Kurus ), which gradually displace the akçe. Beginning of the 19th century, the weight falls, the fineness and thus the acceptance of the smallest Ottoman silver coin shrinking. Finally, their characterization is completely set.
