The Akureyri Airport is an international airport in Akureyri in northern Iceland.

Current flight connections

Air Iceland offers flights to all major airports in Iceland. Currently there are only two international scheduled flights to Copenhagen and London-Stansted, these are offered by Iceland Express.

History

The beginnings of the airport dates back to the 30's when first landing seaplanes on the Pollurinn. Subsequently, a small airfield in Melgerdismelar was used. From 1937 there was a regular air service between Reykjavik and Akureyri.

1955 had the airfield a gravel airstrip. This was paved in 1967.

Today, the airport, which is located 3 km from the center of Akureyri has also a larger airport building with tower.

2010, during the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, Akureyri served temporarily as an alternate airport for the international airport in Keflavik.
