Akwa Ibom State

Akwa Ibom is a state of Nigeria, with its capital Uyo with approximately 750,000 inhabitants (2012 ).

Geography

The state is located in the south of the country, bordered to the north and northwest by the Abia State, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the southwest by the Rivers State and on the east by the Cross River State.

Population

Here the Ibibio ethnic groups, Anang, Oron, Eket, and Mbo Ibeno are common.

History

The state was formed on 23 September 1987 a part of the state of Cross River. First governor was between September 1987 and July 1988 Jonathan Ogbeha. Current governor since May 29, 2007 Godswill Akpabio.

Management

The state is divided into 31 Local Government Areas. These are: Abak, Eastern Obolo, Eket, Esit - Eket, Essien - Udim, Etim Ekpo -, Etinan, Ibeno, Ibesikpo - Asutan, Ibiono - Ibom, Ika, Ikono, Ikot Abasi, Ikot Ekpene -, Ini Itu, Mbo, Mpkat - enyne, Nsit - Atai, Nsit - Ibom, Nsit - Ubuim, Obot Akara -, Okobo, Onna, Oron, Oruk - Anam, Udung - Uko, Ukanafun, Uruan, Urue - Offong - Oruko and Uyo.

Economy

Akwa Ibom is equipped with a variety of mineral resources. These include: petroleum, limestone, clay, natural gas, salt, coal and nitrate. The state is the third largest producer of oil in Nigeria. Here is the base of operations of Exxon Mobil

On agricultural products coconuts, rubber, cocoa, rice, cassava, yams, bananas and maize are grown, produced timber in forestry.

Under the reign of the current Governor, Dr Goodwill Akpabio it comes in Uyo and Akwa Ibom to an economic upturn than in almost any other state in Nigeria. 2014, there are several major construction projects: International hotel projects, the construction of a football stadium. An international hospital with 500 beds and the expansion of the airport are nearing completion. Still in the planning stage is a deep -water port.

The streets are outside Abuja and Lagos as the best.

Security

Contrary to many information Akwa Ibom, Uyo in particular is relatively safe. For years, there were no violent attacks against foreigners more. So one is a stranger / foreigner in the larger cities, even without security staff / police problems go ( with driver). Also, in Uyo, for example, Purchases at the grocery store or out in the markets, cinema, etc. without any problems and support possible. During the night, however, should only be made with security guards / MOPOL cross-country trips.
