Akwamu

The Kingdom of Akwamu was about 1600-1730, the state of the Akan people of Akwamu in present-day Ghana, Togo and Benin. In this case, the state should have extended between the present Winneba on the Atlantic coast of Ghana to to Ouidah, Benin.

The founder of the Kingdom of Akwamu should still until the late 16th or early 17th century Twifu Heman, a place to have lived northwest of the present-day coastal town of Cape Coast. Due to the wealth of gold of the river Birimian the Kingdom Akwamu gained a considerable wealth. It stretched further and further along the coast until it crossed the Volta approximately in 1702 and spread up in today's Benin. We also find the Ladoku Kingdom and some states of the Ewe in the region around the present-day city of Ho were defeated at the present border between Ghana and Togo. The Akwamu included at this time the most powerful Akan peoples and attracted by their expansionism under one of its most prominent rulers, King Ansa Sasraku, in many wars against neighboring countries.

An old ally of the Kingdom of the Akwamu, the Kingdom of Ashanti, strengthened around that time and became a major superpower. The neighboring Kingdom of the Akim joined then with the kingdom of the Ashanti against the Kingdom of Akwamu together and led a long-running war, was defeated in consequence of the ruler of the Akwamu, the Akwamuhene to flight, and the kingdom was finally crushed in around the year 1731.
