Al- Bab (Arabic الباب, DMG al - Bāb, the gate ') is a city in the province of Aleppo in northwestern Syria with about 63,000 inhabitants ( 2004 estimate ). At the administrative city belongs to an identically, around 4000 square kilometer district.

Al- Bab is located 35 kilometers north-east of Aleppo off the leading on to Manbij road. From ancient times no more residues are present. The place was newly founded in 1860 in the border area to an ancient Syrian settlement area. In 1970 the population was estimated at 32,000.

Since about 1960, the groundwater in the treeless steppe field is opened up to a greater extent. Previously, only the cultivation of winter cereals in rotation with fallow was possible. In the area of irrigated agriculture is now operated by diesel pumps. For the needs of Aleppo especially vegetables (tomatoes, eggplant ) and pomegranates are grown.

The city is a major regional trade and craft center with a lively Souq.

In the course of the Syrian Civil War, the city was taken in September 2013 by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). On September 11 aircraft bombed the Assad regime a field hospital in al - Bab, which had attacks of residents and members of the Free Syrian Army on the ISIS headquarters result.
