The Bastakiya ( al bastakiyah, البستكية ) is a historic, standing under a preservation district in Dubai, United Arab Emirates ( UAE), which is located on the Dubai Creek and consists of narrow lanes and wind towers. The neighborhood is also home to the al - Fahidi Fort, the oldest existing building in Dubai.

Together with Schindagha is the Bastakiya one of the oldest residential areas in Dubai. It is named after the city in Iran Bastak, from which many of its residents come from and which are mostly Sunni Arabs who had migrated in ancient times in Iran. In order to evade the tax liability and the reprisals because of their Sunni faith under Naser ad -Din Shah, they moved back to the Arab Gulf states, especially Dubai, Sharjah, Bahrain and Kuwait.

The construction of the Bastakiya dates back to the 1890s. In its early years, the district could accommodate 60 houses, which were separated by narrow, windy streets. Traditionally, the Bastakiya was a stronghold of wealthy residents. However, by the discovery of oil in the Emirate of Dubai, the demographic structure changed: many rich families moved to other neighborhoods and in their place more and more foreign families were middle income in the Bastakiya.

The Bastakiya was already often from demolition. In the 1990s, Prince Charles is said to have learned during a visit to the Bastakiya is to be demolished. He then intervened in the sheikh and can convince him not to pull off the quarter.

In 2005, the Dubai Municipality began a project to restore the historic buildings and streets.

The Bastakiya has since blossomed into an artist and cultural center, with many art galleries, exhibitions and museums. There are plans of the city administration, the Bastakiya with detailed replicas, another museum, a private cultural center, more galleries and restaurants to enlarge.
