Al Neuharth

Allen H. " Al " Neuharth ( born March 22, 1924 in Eureka, South Dakota, † April 19, 2013 in Cocoa Beach, Florida) was an American businessman, author and columnist.

Life

At nineteen Neuharth served in the U.S. Army. After the Second World War, he studied at the University of South Dakota. In 1952 he founded the sports newspaper Sodak Sports, but soon went bankrupt. He then worked for various newspapers.

On behalf of the Gannett media group he founded on 15 September 1982 with USA Today, the first national daily newspaper in the United States. In 1989 he retired after he had made the biggest newspaper publisher Gannett of the U.S..

In December 2004, he caused a stir when he called in his column, withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, and the occupation compared with the Vietnam War.

Neuharth died in 2013 at the age of 89 years from the consequences of a fall.
