Al-Shaheed Monument

The al - shahid Monument (Arabic نصب الشهيد ), also known as " Remembrance of the Martyrs " is an imposing monument in the Iraqi capital Baghdad. It was completed in 1983 during the first Gulf War, serving and honoring the memory of the Iraqi soldiers who have fallen in the first Gulf War.

It is located east of the Tigris near the Army Canal, which separates Sadr City from the rest of Baghdad.

Design

The monument stands on a platform which has a diameter of 190 meters. The platform is located in the center of an artificial lake The monument consists of a 40 -meter-high turquoise dome, which is split down the middle into two non- equal halves. Design and color of the dome is a reference to the Abbasid reign and their structures. An eternal flame is located between the two coupling halves.

The monument is surrounded by a park, which also houses a museum, a library and a cafeteria are located.
