Ala Afrorum

The Ala Afrorum, also called Ala Afrorum Veterana, was a Roman cavalry unit that was set up in Africa proconsularis. She was an ala quingenaria, a unit of about 500 riders.

In the first half of the 1st century AD, the Ala was moved to Europe and stationed in Moesia. At the time of Bataveraufstands ( 69-70 AD), the unit was inferior sent into the modern Netherlands, then part of the province of Germania, to reinforce the Roman troops.

Sure to 158 AD, remained the Ala in Burginatium (now Kalkar ) stationed, with the exception of the period 88 /89 to AD 98, when they fought under Domitian against the Dacians. So she missed the title Pia Fidelis ( " dutiful and loyal ") of 89 AD was awarded to all units in Germania Inferior.

Under Trajan a second Ala Afrorum in Egypt, the Ala II Ulpia Afrorum arose. This unit had veterana no connection with the Ala Afrorum.
