Alabama Warrior Railway

The Alabama Warrior Railway ( AAR reporting mark: ABWR ) is a shunting railway company in Birmingham (Alabama ) in the United States.

The company operates since 2009 the freight traffic on the tracks of the Jefferson Warrior Railroad ( JEFW ) and Walter Coke. The network currently comprises about 40 km free range. Goods in transit are scrap, coal, coke, chemicals and mineral fibers. Thus the produced with Walter Coke coke is transported directly to the tube manufacturing of the neighboring U.S. Pipe. Other customers are Lafarge, Cemex, Harrison Gypsum and Performance Minerals.

In North Birmingham made ​​transitions to the Class 1 circuits of BNSF Railway, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern.

History

In the 1890s, the non-public Mary Lee Railroad was established. The company built a railway line to the blast furnaces of Alabama Consolidated Coal Company ( ACC & I Co.) in North Birmingham with coal from the mines of West Jefferson, Bessie, Nebo, to supply Flat Top and Mary Lee. The Mary Lee Railroad belongs to the ACC & I Co. and was taken with this in October 1924 by the Sloss Sheffield Steel and Iron Company (now Walter Coke as a subsidiary of Walter Energy ).

On 1 January 1985, the Mary Lee Railroad became a public railway company and was then called Jefferson Warrior Railroad. 1995 were transported by the approximately 20 employees 12,000 freight cars. The company owns six locomotives ( four EMD SW1500 ( Nos. 51 to 54) and two EMD NW2M (No. 55 and 56) ).

On August 7, 2009 at Watco Companies associated with newly formed Alabama Warrior Railway took over the operation on the track.
