Alagir

Alagir (Russian Алагир, Ossetian Алагир ) is an industrial city in the Russian republic of North Ossetia-Alania. It lies on the western bank of the Ardon, 54 kilometers west of the North Ossetian capital Vladikavkaz. In Alagir 20 949 people ( as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

The city was founded in 1850 by Prince Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov, the Viceroy of the Caucasus, in the vicinity of a former silver mine. Alagir was built as a fortified settlement to a melt around and quickly rose to become a center for mining. 1938 Alagir became a town.

Alagir was occupied during the German summer offensive of 1942 (Operation Edelweiss) by German troops and freed again in January 1943 after demolition of the offensive of the year 1942/43, and the start of the Soviet counter-offensive (North Caucasian surgery).

Economy

The city's economy is still dominated by the mining industry. In addition, wood processing plants, canning factories and manufacturing plants have settled in the city.
