Alain I of Albret

Alain d' Albret (* 1440, † 1522), called the Great (French le Grand ), was the 16th Lord of Albret, Viscount of Tartas, 2nd Earl Graves and Earl of Castres. He was the son of Jean d' Albret, Viscount of Tartas, and his wife Catherine de Rohan. His maternal grandparents were Alain IX. , Vicomte de Rohan, and Marguerite de Bretagne, Dame de Guillac. Paternal His grandparents were Charles II d' Albret, Comte de Dreux, and Anne d' Armagnac. He was thus grandson and 1471 the heir of Charles II d' Albret.

Cleverly and unprincipled, greedy and not very conscientious, he was half a century a go-getting, albeit slightly more effective politician who attracted attention at European level. Alain could of his fidelity to King Louis XI. benefit from France by the enlargement of its territory. He married Françoise de Châtillon, which earned her heritage as the County of Périgord and the Vice- county Limoges in the marriage. His son, Jean, he married Catherine of Navarre, the heiress of the county of Foix and Bigorre and the Kingdom of Navarre.

In connection with the Guerre folle (1485-1488), he became the candidate for the hand of Anne de Bretagne, thus the possession of the Duchy of Brittany. His intrigues, however, led to nothing, and he was - without being able to support the Duke of Brittany - 1487 defeated. The following year, he led his troops across the sea to Brittany, but was at the Battle of Saint- Aubin- du- Cormier again on the losing side. Although he continued to try to be in Brittany heir, found it on the other hand but also advantageous to entrust the city of Nantes deliver the royal army.

His daughter Charlotte married in 1500 Cesare Borgia. His son Jean died in 1516, so his legacy to his grandson, King Henry II of Navarre went. Through his daughter Johanna III. Alain d'Albret of Navarre is a great-grandfather of the French King Henry IV
