Alan Gilbert (conductor)

Alan Gilbert ( born February 23, 1967 in New York City ) is an American conductor and since 2009 chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic.

Alan Gilbert is the son of Michael Gilbert, who in 2001 was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic until his retirement, and Yoko Takebe, which to this day there is also a violinist.

Career

He studied music at Harvard University, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Juilliard School of Music in New York under Otto -Werner Mueller.

1994 Alan Gilbert won the first prize at the Concours de Genève.

After studying Alan Gilbert was 1995-1997 Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnányi.

From 2000 to 2008 he was chief conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Gilbert Stockholm ( Kungliga Filharmonikerna ) plus 2003-2006 Music Director of the Santa Fe Opera. Since 2004 he has been Principal Guest Conductor of the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, with the Gilbert was already several times on tour.

With the season of 2009/10 Gilbert succeeds by Lorin Maazel as conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Gilbert is the first native New Yorker to hold the post. He opened his first concert with the work of Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg EXPO, which is 2009 Composer in Residence at the New York Philharmonic since September.

Since 2009, Gilbert has also held the William Schuman Chair in Musical Studies at New York's Juilliard School, where he teaches and conducts concerts.

Private

Alan Gilbert is married to the cellist Kajsa William - Olsson, who played with the Royal Philharmonic Stockholm. They have three children and live in New York City and Stockholm.
