Life

He studied at the Ealing School of Art in 1975 and moved to Dartmoor. He became famous in 1978 with his illustrations for the book Faeries, which he brought out with Brian Froud. His book covers were made of the fantasy scene impossible to imagine from there.

Style

Alan Lee is known for his distinctive watercolor and pencil technique that derives its charm mainly from the varied interplay of light and dark areas. The scene is usually indicated only rough outline, but wins by the following hatching or configuration with watercolors a fascinating depth. His works are characterized by a high degree of detail and a very intuitive picture composition. In contrast to John Howe Alan Lee eschews the comic-like exaggeration of characters and landscapes; his images are relatively low in contrast, decorated in earth tones and mostly viewed from fairly conventional perspectives. This lives his motives held a magical tranquility that makes his success in the classic fairy tale and fantasy sector.
