Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse

Albert - Ernest Carrier -Belleuse ( born June 12, 1824 Anizy -le- Château, Aisne, † June 3, 1887 in Sèvres ) was a French sculptor and draftsman. His work is attributable to the naturalism.

Life and work

Carrier-Belleuse studied from 1840 with Pierre Jean David d' Angers at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris, which he attended only a short time because he wanted to be a chaser first. Since the 1850s he carried out works in marble, bronze sculptures and terracotta busts, the coquettish elegance combined with a completely naturalistic and picturesque view. Through the picturesque and naturalistic treatment they assumed a most vivid expression. In 1864 he became friends with the young sculptor Auguste Rodin. The resulting 1867 sculpture " The little Saviour uplifting Madonna" earned him the Medal of Honor at the Salon de Paris. He was considered one of the most successful decorative sculptor of his time and was called the " Clodion of the Second Empire " ( Claude Michel Clodion, 1738-1814 ).

After the armistice in 1871 Carrier Belleuse went with Rodin to Brussels to accept public contracts under his cooperation and assistance. Among others, they led on the south facade of the stock market from a frieze between Attica and the column wall. He designed the sculptural work of the tomb for the 1873 late Belgian painter and photographer Louis Ghemar. After a dispute with Rodin, who laid on greater autonomy value, he went back to Paris.

From 1875 to 1887, he was artistic director and conductor of the workshops of the Manufacture royale de porcelaine de Sèvres Sèvres, which he reorganized and for which he created a large number of porcelain forms. Auguste Rodin, who returned in 1877 from Brussels, worked until 1882 for Carrier Belleuse and also created works that were signed by Carrier Belleuse ( "Vase of the Titans "). Rodin hired him in 1882 in the terra cotta work Buste d' Albert - Ernest Carrier -Belleuse, 47x41 cm, dar.

Albert - Ernest Carrier -Belleuse died at the age of 63 years.

Children

His son Louis- Robert Carrier -Belleuse (1848-1913) also took the profession of sculptor and was also active as a painter. His daughter Henriette became his disciple and flower painter. She exhibited at the Salon in 1874 and 1879 and later married the sculptor Joseph Cheret, who became his successor as artistic director of the porcelain manufactory at Sèvres. Pierre Carrier -Belleuse (1851-1933), Knight of the Legion of Honour, was a noted painter of genre paintings, pastels and illustrations. Works of the artist are in the museums of La Rochelle, du Puy, Reims, Versailles and Paris. He was one of the painters of the image Panthéon de la Guerre 1914-1918, which was in its time the largest painting in the world and in a panoramic represented the prominent figures of the First World War. Parts of the plant are now in Kansas City.
