Albert I of Käfernburg

Albert I of Käfernburg ( Albert) (* 1170, † October 15, 1232 in Cividale del Friuli, buried in 1233 in the Cathedral of Magdeburg ) was the 18th Archbishop of Magdeburg, came from the Thuringia Counts of Kevernburg, went to the Hildesheimer Cathedral School, studied in Paris and Bologna.

Already in 1200 by the favor of Innocent III. Provost of Magdeburg, he was in 1205, after he had King Philip connected, chosen by the Hohenstaufen party archbishop of Magdeburg and ordained end in 1206 by the Pope.

The new building of the destroyed by fire on April 20, 1207 the cathedral is his major work. He imported the first Gothic style from France.

After Philip of Swabia murder Albrecht helped the Welf Otto IV for recognition throughout Germany and in 1209 accompanied him to Italy. But in 1210 Otto met the spell, had him in spite of all the bucking Albrecht in Germany proclaim what he was in 1212 the election of the Hohenstaufen Frederick II operation to the king. Therefore Albrecht the night and its territory met years of devastation caused by the Guelphs. After restored peace Albrecht took the homeless by the war inhabitants in the solid Neustadt and with her in the urban community.

A feud with the Margrave of Brandenburg, Johann and Otto, he fought through. In 1222 he followed the Emperor Frederick II in Italy and was appointed Count of Romagna and the deputy of the emperor in northern Italy. In Albrecht's recommendation Walther von der Vogelweide received in 1224 his Würzburg fief. Albrecht brought out a large part of his life in Italy and endeavored especially peace between the Emperor and the Pope to receive.
