Albert McCarthy

Albert J. McCarthy ( * 1920 in Camborne, † 1987) was an English jazz writer, disco graph, jazz journalist and jazz historian.

Life and work

McCarthy, the magazine "Jazz Music" published already during the war in England with Max Jones ( and after the war, the PL Yearbook of Jazz), was editor of the 1955-1971 published English " Jazz Monthly" and started with two other English authors in 1949 the Sisyphean task of a full jazz discography (alphabetically created with blues and gospel ). When they arrived at Vol 6 (K- Lo) in 1957, a revision of the first volume was simultaneously necessary and the project was finally abandoned by the publisher - other disco graphs like Brian Rust then confined to limited release dates and McCarthy were still, for B. been a jazz discography for the year 1958. McCarthy is best known for his meticulously researched books on big band and swing music, especially "Big Band Jazz " (1974 ), in which for the first time (partly based on research conducted by Frank Driggs ) in detail on the " territory bands " was received in the South and Midwest of the United States. He has also written numerous journal articles and liner notes.
