Albert Mehrabian

Albert Mehrabian ( born 1939 ) is an American psychologist and professor emeritus at the University of California in Los Angeles. Mehrabian comes from an Armenian family.

Outside of scientific psychology Mehrabian became known through a statement on the importance of non-verbal elements in human communication. According to the so-called 7-38 -55- rule is the effect of communication on their own emotional feelings of liking / rejection ( "like" / "dislike ") to the component content, vocal or mimic expression is contradictory with respect to 7% determined by the linguistic content to 38% by the vocal expression and 55% by the body language. In two studies from 1967, in which Mehrabian was involved, positive, neutral and negative words were spoken respectively with positive, neutral and negative expression and played to subjects as well as the neutral word " maybe" ( "maybe" ), spoken in the three forms of expression, combined with photos of various facial expressions. The study investigated how people assign any inconsistency between the spoken word and voice or voice and facial expressions a statement. 1971 certain Mehrabian from the relative efficiency ratio of the three components. Often a general rule for interpersonal communication is wrongly derived from this result.
