Albert Szirmai

Albert Szirmai ( Sirmay ) ( born July 2, 1880 in Budapest, † January 15, 1967 in New York City, New York) was a Hungarian operetta composer and conductor.

Life

After studying at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music ( with Hans Koessler and Árpád Szendy ) he was accompanist at the Theatre " Népszínház - Vígopera ". There, his first stage work "A sárga dominó " ( The Yellow Domino ) was premiered in 1907.

From 1907 he worked as a conductor Cabaret " Modern Színház " ( " Modern Theatre " ), later on " Andrássy úti Színház " ( Theatre at the Andrássy Street "). His popular operettas, which until 1928 in " Király Színház " (Royal Theatre) came on stage, were soon performed in Vienna, Berlin and London. the composed to texts by Jenő Heltai, Andor Gábor Mihály Babits and Ernő Szép Chansons sang the best performer.

After 1928 he lived in New York, but his new works could not prevail. He was senior editor at Chappel -Verlag. For Kurt Weill in 1941 he wrote the piano score of the musical Lady in the Dark. Towards the end of his life he again visited frequently Hungary; then came two new plants with success to the performance.
