Alberto Iria

Alberto Iria, actually Joaquim Alberto Iria Júnior (* December 27 1909 in Olhao in the Algarve, Portugal, † 24 February 1992 in Paço de Arcos, near Lisbon, Portugal ) was a Portuguese historian and archivist.

After attending high school in Faro he studied until 1936, history, philosophy, literature and librarianship at the University of Lisbon and at the University of Coimbra and a doctorate on the history of the French invasion of General Andoche Junot in the Algarve from 1808. Thereafter, he worked as an archivist at the Finance Ministry and the National Library.

From 1946 to 1975 he was director of the colonial archive ( Ultramarine Historical Archive ), together with the Treasury Department, he organized several special exhibitions and anniversary. He then became a member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon and in 1984 vice-president of the National Academy of History (1987 Honorary President ).

Iria was " commander " of the Order of the Southern Cross and was regarded as a specialist, especially for the history of his home region of Algarve.
