The Albula (Romansh Alvra ) is the largest tributary of the Rhine and back runs in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The name derives from Latin albulus ( whitish ).

About the valley system of the Albula pass road ways in which the Engadine is connected to the rest of Switzerland, including the Albula Pass ( Pass dall ' Alvra ), on the west side it springs.

The Albula valley is characterized by a frequent change of wide valley bottoms and canyons, and provides little settlement area. The main tributaries are the Tuorsbach, the land water, both at the mouth longer than the Albula, and Julia ( Güglia ) over which the Julier Pass is reached. The country is water at the mouth not only longer, but also significantly higher water content than Albula (9.45 m³ / s compared to 5.67 m³ / s). About the Landwassertal with the city of Davos Flüelapass is achieved.

The River follows along its entire length, the Albula Railway Rhaetian Railway. It has in the Albula one of its most spectacular routes and is classified to this section by the UNESCO as world heritage.

Use

The water power of the Albula is used in several power plants. The highest and the oldest dam is the Palpuognasee lake ( Lai da Palpuogna ), which was to gain power for the construction of the Albula tunnel, dammed in 1898. He is often touted as one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland. In Berguen Islas part of the Albula is again caught and passed through a pressure tunnel for about 10 km from the power plant Filisur ( 64 MW ) of the Albula country hydropower plants ( ALK ). The water return via a compensating basin in Filisur. Below Tiefencastel Albula takes left hand on the Julia and flows through the Schin canyon. In the gorge the Albula since 1986 is dammed by the arch dam Solis to a river -like effect in close canyon lake before it is spanned by Solis viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway and the next passing car street. The water is the power plants Sils and Roth Fountain of EWZ fed via pressure tunnel where the water flows back - in Sils still in the Albula, in Roth wells already in the Rhine.

The residual water in the Albula opens after 40 kilometers at Fuerstenau in the Rhine. With natural drainage, which is not currently set by the use of hydropower in both rivers, the Albula is 29.1 m³ / s greater than the background Rhine, the 27.3 leads there m³ / s of water.
