Alby, Botkyrka

Alby is a suburb of the Swedish community Botkyrka, which lies in the Stockholm County. A total of approximately 11,400 inhabitants live in Alby, of which 60.6 % are of foreign origin. 7.4 % of the population are unemployed (as of 31 December 2010).

Geography

The village is surrounded by forest ( German: " Albysee " ) on Albysjön, which also has a dedicated port on a small bay.

History

The place name is from al, the Swedish word for " alder " and by " village" composed and thus means " alder village".

In Alby traces of a Bronze Age settlement were discovered. Among the finds are about 850 pieces of pottery, a fragmentary Schaftlochaxt and a blue glass bead.

Alloys original farmhouse was built in the Middle Ages. The present farmhouse was built in 1895 in the Empire style and has elements of classicism. Lars Magnus Ericsson, the inventor lived there from 1895 until his death.

A subway station was opened on 12 January 1975. It combines Alby with the Stockholm subway.

The center was remodeled in the 1990s. It was created space for businesses. There is also a hospital, several baseball fields and its own softball team.

The public library in Alby, formerly stood on the same site as the Albyer school, moved in April 2008 to a new building. The old library at the school was demolished in 2009.
