Alcafache is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) Mangualde with 917 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

From Roman times parts of a Roman road are still there. The place name comes from the Arab period from the 8th century AD During the Konsilidierung the independent kingdom of Portugal from 1140 was Alcafache seat of its own circle. The use of the bubbling hot springs here is attested since the 15th century.

Alcafache received city rights in 1514 by King Manuel I. Since about 1527 the district was dissolved, and existed as a separate municipality in the district of Mangualde on.

The community was known nationwide as on September 11, 1985, the Sud- Express collided head-on with a local train here.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of the community include a number sacred and stone crosses, historic homes and the mansion Quinta de Santa Eufémia, a stone fountain, and two primary school buildings. Also, going back to a 1774 existing church Igreja Matriz de Alcafache Congregational Church ( Igreja de São Vicente also ) is mentioned.

Also applies likewise listed bridge over the Rio Dão as worth seeing.

Economy

Wine production here of over 400 wine growers, the community is part of the ancestry protected wine region of Dão. Agriculture is generally continues to be a significant factor, especially vegetables. The local sheep give milk for cheeses that are already counted for Queijo Serra da Estrela.

Tourism is also to mention, in particular in relation to the thermal baths Termas de Alcafache, but also in rural tourism.
