Alcochete is a town ( Vila ) and a Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) in the district of Setúbal with 17,565 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011 ).

Geography

Alcochete is located on the southeastern shore of the Tagus Cove, in Greater Margem Sul do Tejo. Opposite is the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, from Alcochete is 17 km away by ferry.

History

It is believed that the colonization of Alcochete is due to the Moors as the name of Al Caxete (oven) is derivable. But in Roman times the area around Alcochete played a role as a center for the manufacture of pottery amphorae ( etc. as fish oil, salt ) were used for the storage and transport of food needed. During excavations in the near Porto dos Cacos three kilns, a large number of amphorae and a necropolis were found.

The construction of the main church is attributed to the 14th century. City rights were granted in Alcochete 1515th In the 20th century Alcochete developed because of its proximity to Lisbon for residential suburb of the capital. In particular, after the Tejobrücke Vasco da Gama the eastern shore linked directly to the center of the capital. Nevertheless Alcochete has still preserved the historic structures of a small town or fishing village.

Airport

The nearest airport is the international airport Portela. It is located in 15 km as the crow to Alcochete.

Since 2008, the planning on the grounds Campo de Tiro to build a new international airport for Lisbon.

Road

The road N119 leads São Francisco forth into the city and to the east out of the city. Eastwards leads then to the IC3 and the Vasco da Gama Bridge.

The street Rua do 25 Abril is then on the outskirts of M501 and leads to Samouco.

Retail

In Alcochete to branches are the supermarket chains Inter Marché, Lidl, Pingo Doce and Minipreco.

The Design Outlet Freeport opened its doors in the summer of 2004.
