Alejo Vidal-Quadras Roca

Alejo Vidal- Quadras Roca ( born May 20, 1945 in Barcelona, also known by the Catalan form of the name Aleix Vidal- Quadras ) is a Spanish politician of the conservative party PP and Member of the European Parliament.

Life

Vidal- Quadras studied nuclear physics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he graduated in 1975 with honors. After that, he was a professor of nuclear physics as well as guest lecturer at the Centre de Recherches Nucléaires in Strasbourg and at University College Dublin at the same university. In 1983 he was awarded the Prize of the Spanish Nuclear Energy Agency.

In the Catalan regional elections in 1980, he took up for the small party solidarity Catalana, but was not elected. In regional elections in 1988 he moved into the Catalan regional parliament for the conservative Partido Popular. From 1990 to 1996 he was Group Chairman and President of the Regional Council of his party. He was also a 1991 to 1995 the city council of Barcelona. In regional elections in 1992 and 1995, he took up as the top- candidate of the PP, which has traditionally been poorly represented in Catalonia. He was able to significantly improve their election results and achieved in 1995 with 17 members the best result of the PP in Catalonia at all, but still remained far behind the ruling party Convergència i Unio ( CiU ) Jordi Pujol under back.

Since 1993, Vidal- Quadras is a member of spain wide PP National Executive. From 1995 to 1999 he was a member of the Spanish Senate.

Political positions

Alejo Vidal -Quadras is considered a member of the conservative wing of the PP, particularly with regard to his rejection of regional nationalisms, as they are in Spain as in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia. In 1996, he criticized therefore cooperation between the PP government under José María Aznar and the Catalan nationalist party CiU. In 2008, he sat on a Congress of the PP by a political strategy by which the party should seek coalitions with the also total Spanish socialist party PSOE, if possible, to avoid participation in government nationalist parties.
