Aleksandr Deyneka

Alexander Alexandrovich Deineka (Russian Александр Александрович Дейнека; * 8 ​​Maijul / May 20 1899greg in Kursk, .. † June 12, 1969 in Moscow) was a Russian painter, printmaker and sculptor.

Biography

Alexander Deineka studied from 1915 to 1917 at the School of Art Kharkov. In 1917, he broke off his studies there and went to the Red Army. In 1918 he was employed as a photographer of the Judicial Police in Kursk and also served as Head of the Department of Fine Arts at the Gouvernementabteilung of Education. From 1919 to 1920 he worked for the agitation edition of Rosta windows and headed the art studio of the Political Administration of Kursk. In 1921 he went to Moscow and studied at the WChUTEMAS (Russian ВХУТЕМАС ), an avant-garde design school in Vladimir Faworski graphics. In 1928 he and others founded the artists group Октябр ( October group) and was influenced in his penchant for the monumental initially by Ferdinand Hodler. 1931/32 he became a member of the Russian Association of Proletarian Artists and from 1932 a member of the Moscow branch of the Soviet Union of Artists. In the following years he became the chief representative of Socialist Realism in the Soviet Union. He later was one of the most important book and magazine illustrators and also got orders for murals and mosaics.

Awards

1937 Alexander Deineka was awarded the Gold Medal at the Paris World Exhibition. Since 1960 he was a member of the CPSU and of 1962-66 Vice- President of the Academy of Fine Arts of the USSR.
