Aleksandr Galkin (chess player)

Alexander Alexandrovich Galkin (Russian Александр Александрович Галкин; born 1 February 1979 in Rostov-on- Don ) is a Russian grandmaster in chess.

Galkin won the 1999 in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, the Junior World Championship (U 20). He won with 10.5 points from 13 games with six points ahead of the later FIDE world champion Rustam Kasimjanov, who had gone as the number one seeding in the tournament ( on the 3rd - 4th place followed by the Armenians, and today " Super Grandmaster " Levon Aronian ).

In the same year Galkin was used in the Russian national team, at the 12th European Team in the Georgian Batumi he remained unbeaten on the fourth board and finished with the team to fifth place.

In the World Chess Championships in 2000 and 2004, which were held in Knock- Out mode, Galkin failed with timely: 2000 in New Delhi, he was defeated, after the opening win against Alex well, in the second round of the Ukrainian Grandmaster Alexander Beliavsky. 2004 in Tripoli Galkin lost in the first round against the Bulgarians Alexandar Delchev.

Galkins current Elo rating is 2598 (as of May 2011). His previous highest number of 2624 he reached in October 2008. Recently among the top 100 players in the Elo world ranking he was in April 2006.
