Alex Machacek

Alex Machacek (born 1972 in Tulln an der Donau) is an Austrian, living in the United States and jazz fusion guitarist and composer.

Alex Machacek comes from a Czech refugee family that arrived in the 1960s to Austria. He grew up in Vienna, where he had classical guitar lessons from eight years. From rock, interest shifted in his youth to jazz; Early models were Joe Pass, Mike Stern and John Scofield. At age 16, he attended the Vienna Conservatory and studied jazz guitar and went next with various groups on to pop cover bands in the spectrum of Dixieland jazz, the singer- songwriter scene. Under the influence of the music of Allan Holdsworth and Frank Zappa, he developed his style further; formative influence was especially the drum solo by Terry Bozzio in Zappa's "The Black Page " from the album Zappa in New York. In 1993, he attended the Summer School in Perugia, then to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and recover in Vienna the degree in jazz pedagogy.

In 1999 he released his first solo album Featuring Ourselves and he worked with Terry Bozzio at the Vienna Jazz Festival together. 2001 created a joint album with Bozzio and saxophonist Gerald Preinfalk Delete and roll under the band name BPM. With the band Machacek was founded in 2002 on two European tours. 2003 Machacek and Bozzio played with former bassist Patrick O'Hearn Zappa, whose collaboration on the DVD Out Trio was documented. Machacek also toured with his Austrian trio, which included bassist Raphael Preuschl and drummer Herbert Pirker. Since 2004, Machacek lives with his wife Sumitra in Los Angeles, where he works at the Musicians Institute. In 2007 he played in the band with Eddie Jobson project UKZ, former King Crimson bassist Trey Gunn, Marco Minnemann and Aaron Lippert.
