Alex Nyarko

Alex Nyarko (born 15 October 1973, Accra; actually Alexander Nyarko ) is a former Ghanaian / Swiss football player and bronze medalist of the Olympic Games in Barcelona. The 1.84 m wide and 83 kg midfielder was active in the German-speaking world for FC Basel, Karlsruher SC and Yverdon- Sport FC.

Club career

In his youth Nyarko played in Ghana for the clubs FC Deawa Youngsters and Asante Kotoko before he went to Europe and there initially to Sportul Studenţesc Bucharest. In 1995, he joined the Swiss National League A club FC Basel, from where it two years later he moved to a few kilometers north - the German Bundesliga club Karlsruher SC.

After the descent of the Karlsruhe in the Bundesliga 2 Nyarko moved in 1998 to the French champions RC Lens. For the equivalent of 6.3 million euros this Nyarko sold in 2000 to the English first division club FC Everton, he was officially published in whose service until 2005. However started for Nyarko now a very unstable time ... after some difficulty (see section Fanskandal 2001) was tried by the British side to make him out to other clubs, so he followed up for an entire season for half a year at AS Monaco and 2002 Paris St. Germain was awarded.

Finally, in 2005 the British left Nyarko and went to Norway to Start Kristiansand. After a long time has been speculation about an engagement with FC Lausanne-Sport, he eventually signed for Yverdon -Sport FC a contract until 2008. Nyarko there ended his active career.

Internationals

For his country Ghana Nyarko completed 44 internationals. Among them were two appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1998 in Burkina Faso and Ghana in 2000. In 1992 he was part of the Ghanaian team that finished in third place in Barcelona at the Olympic Games.

Fan scandal 2001

During his time at Everton Nyarko hit the headlines when he was attacked on 21 April 2001, during a game against Arsenal by a fan on the pitch, who wanted to relieve him of his jersey. The London player Tony Adams could push back the attackers though, Nyarko was then but, also due to persistent criticism of his performance, so unnerved that he had to replace themselves in the excitement and announced his retirement from professional football. After the game, he disappeared for days, according to his own statement did not even know his wife his whereabouts. Although Everton Nyarko initially wanted to make no allegations about his behavior, it was announced two weeks later, Nyarko was now resurfaced that this would get the approval for a change to another club. First, however, there was no other club that Nyarko wanted a firm commitment, so this was awarded to France.

  • In February 2003, Nyarko said, after he had come in just three years for four different clubs to use, he was " not satisfied with his footballing situation " and " the permanent club AC tired ".
  • After moving to Karlsruher SC Nyarko had such difficulty finding a suitable apartment that eventually it asked the fans to help the stadium announcer in Karlsruhe.
