Alex St. Clair

Alex St. Claire (actually Alexis Clair Snouffer, born 14 September 1941 † about January 5, 2006 ) was an American guitarist, known primarily for his work with Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart.

Life

1959 joined St. Clair in his first band, The Omen, where he met Captain Beefheart. In 1965 he was a founding member of the Magic Band. After recording of the first two albums he left the Magic Band, since he could not live by the commercially unsuccessful music of the Captains. He was replaced by Bill Harkleroad. St. Claire joined then at Denny King's Boogie Band and can be heard on their album Evil Wind Blowing. Since he did not have the hoped-for success here, he returned in 1971 to the Magic Band back, but they had shortly after the recordings for Clear Spot, again, leave due to financial problems and returned briefly back to Denny King. But by whose music he could not live. Later he worked as a waiter in Idaho. In the 90s he started a computer company in Lancaster, but also did not go well and he succumbed to alcohol.

St. Clair was found dead in his apartment on January 5, 2006. Whether he died on this day and what remains unclear.
