Alexander & Baldwin

Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. is a group of companies based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Business segments include freight transport (especially the cargo shipping ), cultivation and marketing of sugar cane and activities in other sectors of agriculture (coffee, irrigation) and real estate development. Alexander & Baldwin was once one of the five largest operators of sugar cane plantations in Hawaii (along with C. Brewer & Co., Theo H. Davies & Co., Amfac and Castle and Cooke ) and of these five, which was once a veritable economic oligarchy in Hawaii formed, the only company that still operate the business today. With 370 square kilometers of Alexander & Baldwin is still one of the largest landowners in Hawaii, in addition, the company also includes lands on the U.S. mainland. The group employs more than 2200 employees (as of 2008) and is headed by W. Allen Doane. It is listed on the NASDAQ exchange and was represented in the stock market index, the Dow Jones Composite Average.
