Alexander Rinnooy Kan

Alexander Hendrik George Rinnooy Kan (born 5 October 1949 in The Hague) is a Dutch mathematician and managers.

Rinnooy Kan grew up in The Hague and studied at the University of Leiden and Amsterdam University (Bachelor 's degree in Econometrics 1972). After that, he was at the TU Delft and in 1976 at the University of Amsterdam in Gijsbert de Leve doctorate (Machine scheduling problems: classification, complexity and computations ). From 1977 he was at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where he was Professor of Operations Research in 1980 and 1983 Director of the Institute of Econometrics. In 1986 he was rector of the university. He is since 2012 Professor of Economics at the University of Amsterdam.

He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in Brussels, at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

1991 to 1996 he was president of the Dutch employers' association VNO -NCW or VNO. 1996 to 2006 he was on the board of ING responsible for Asia. 2006 to 2012 he was president of the SER ( Sociaal - Economische Raad ), which advises the Dutch Parliament in social and economic issues.

He is a Commander of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

He is the Council of the Concertgebouw, the Amsterdam cultural center De Balie and the Prince Bernhard Cultural Fund. He is a member of the party Democraten 66 and the Innovation Platform. Rinnooy Kan honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels.

2007, 2008 and 2009, he was elected by the daily newspaper Volkskrant most influential Dutchman.
