Alexander Shuvalov

Alexander Ivanovich Shuvalov (Russian Александр Иванович Шувалов; * 1710, † 1770) was Chief of the Secret Chancellery ( State Security ) under Elizabeth Petrovna.

Biography

Alexander Ivanovich Shuvalov was the son of General Ivan Shuvalov Maximowitsch the Elder, who commanded the fortress of Vyborg and Archangel. Shuvalov was among the small circle, which in their exile in Izmailovo (now Moscow) accompanied the future Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. He was a member of the Guard and the coup d'état that Elisabeth raised to the throne, actively involved. This secured him the lifelong gratitude of the monarch, who in 1741 elevated him to Chamberlain and 1746 to the Count.

Shuvalov headed for many years the Secret Chancellery, a kind of state security police. In this position, he eliminated all political enemies of Elizabeth and even his own family.
