Alexander Wittek

Alexander Wittek ( born October 12, 1852 in Sisak, † May 11, 1894 in Graz) was an Austrian - Hungarian architect and chess players.

Life

Wittek worked full time as an architect in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro -Hungarian monarchy. He created the corporate town hall of Sarajevo.

Wittek was also a chess master: in Berlin in 1881, he won the split 5 - 6th Won second place in the DSB - Congress, Joseph Henry Blackburne. Wittek was awarded also in the Tournament of Vienna in 1882 the 9th Place ( still "unofficial world champions" - the world champion was only awarded from 1886 - Wilhelm Steinitz and Simon Winawer won ). Wittek died in a psychiatric hospital in Graz in 1894, after a " paralytic mental illness " diagnosed. The circumstances of death are controversial: One source states that Wittek has committed suicide. In contrast, explains the Clinic of Graz that Wittek died there of tuberculosis.
