Alexandre Benois

Alexander Nikolaevich Benois Alexandre Benois or (Russian Александр Николаевич Бенуа, scientific transliteration: .. Aleksandr Nikolaevich Benua; * 21 Apriljul / May 3 1870greg in Saint Petersburg, † February 9, 1960 in Paris) was a Russian painter, writer, art historian, art critic, and - in addition to Sergei Diaghilev, Lev Bakst, inter alia, - Founder of the movement and the same art magazine Mir Iskusstwa.

Life

Born in a family of artists, the son of architect Nicholas Benois, he studied for some time at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and formed beyond self and artistically under the guidance of his elder brother Albert Benois on. Originally he did not want to follow the family tradition and pursue a career as an artist. Instead, he began studying law at St. Petersburg University.

His career as an art theorist and historian, he began in 1894 by he wrote a chapter on Russian artists for the German anthology The history of 19th century painting. In the years 1896-1898 and for the period from 1905 to 1907 he lived and worked in France. Here he began a series of watercolors to draw, issued in 1897 by Pavel Tretyakov. Against this background, Benois made ​​the acquaintance with Sergei Diaghilev and Leon Bakst. Together with this, he was a founder and ideological heads of the artist association I Iskusstwa and founded the magazine of the same name.

In 1918 he published the catalog of the Hermitage Gallery. Later he continued his work as a book author and theater artists. In 1926 he left the USSR to a trip abroad, not to return again. He went to live in Paris, where he mainly worked in theater decorations and costumes. He died in 1960 in Paris.

Alexander Benua practiced with his work from a great influence on the modern ballet, as well as the design of the decoration and the costumes in the theater life of his time. The Art Gallery Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, he bequeathed the legacy of his brother - a collection of paintings by Old Masters.
