Alexandru Callimachi

Alexandru Callimachi was on 6 May 1795 to March 1799 the Prince of Moldavia.

Life

Like his father Ioan Teodor Callimachi he was considered wise and had a gentle character. Due to the ever increasing demands of the tribute Ottomans Callimachi had to increase the wine tax ( " vădrărit "). Become weary of his reign, he called three times by the Sublime Porte his release, which was finally granted to him in 1799. The rest of his life he spent in Istanbul.

The old university in Iasi was a former seat of the ruler 's name Callimachi palace. It was originally the residence of the Treasurer Ion Cantacuzino, later the Prince Alexandru Callimachi offered.
