Alexandru Hurmuzaki

Hormuzaki Alexander ( born August 16, 1823 in Czernawka ( Cernăuca ) in Czernowitz ( Cernăuţi ); † March 8, 1871 in Naples, buried in Dulcesti, Neamţ County ), was an Austrian - Romanian politician and journalist in the Duchy of Bukovina.

Descent

This family, which is its name in Greek, fanariotischer descent, belonged to the nobility of Moldova. In 1636 a Hurmuzaki was gifted for his services for the sofa from Prince of Moldavia with an estate. Under the reign of Prince Nikolaus Mavrocordatos, a Fanariot, Emanuel equerry and sofa was a member.

Constantin, purchased in 1765 the estate Czernawka ( Cernăuca ). Alexander's father Doxaki (1782-1857) used fled for political reasons Romanian leaders from Transylvania to grant refuge under high financial commitment. Biography

He was a member of parliament and Bukovina on many years of imperial parliaments. Alexander was one of the preparer of the Romanian national movement in Bukovina, co-founder of the " Romanian Academic Society ", President of the Romanian Cultural and Literary Society, the predecessor of which was founded on April 1, 1866 " Academia Română " ( Romanian Academy ), whose founding members he counted. He sat down explicitly for the introduction of the Romanian language in schools and the reform of the education system.
