Alexey Smertin

Alexei Gennadjewitsch Smertin (Russian Алексей Геннадьевич Смертин; born May 1, 1975 in Barnaul ) is a retired Russian football player and an active politician.

Career

The defensive midfielder began his career with his hometown club Dynamo Barnaul, where he was brought into the first team in 1992. In 1994 he moved to Zaria Leninsk- Kusnetskij. In 1997 it went on to Uralan Elista. From 1999 to 2000 Smertin then played his first top club Lokomotiv Moscow. His first club as a legionnaire was in France with Bordeaux. 2003 was the Russian for the first time on the British island of Portsmouth, before a year later moved to Chelsea. Beginning of the 2005/06 season played Smertin at Charlton Athletic. For the 2006/07 season, he returned to his home to Dynamo Moscow, before the 2007/ 08 season he moved back into the Premier League for Fulham FC.

After his contract was terminated in 2008, Smertin launched a new career in Russian politics. Since March 2009 he has held a seat in parliament in the Altai region.
