Alfa Romeo Montreal

The Alfa Romeo Montreal is a sports coupe, Alfa Romeo, which was built by fall 1970 to spring 1977. As a design study by Marcello Gandini ( chief designer at Bertone ) the car was presented in 1967 at the World Exhibition Expo 67 in Montreal for the first time. Resulted also the name of the vehicle from the place of issue.

The appearance immediately found the interest of the experts, so that you decided to use a series production. Remarkable are the of lamellar aperture partially concealed headlamps. The covers fold up when you turn the lights down.

The eight-cylinder engine first used in Alfa Romeo in a production vehicle with four overhead camshafts and mechanical Spica manifold injection was descended from the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 used in racing, but was amended for the required practicality and enlarged to 2.6 liters. The vehicle took over from the planned for a mid-engine design study, the side vents, but was never intended for a mid-engine as the Type 33, but designed from the outset for a front engine. The power was 147 kW ( 200 hp ) at 6500 rpm. The chassis design was relatively comfortable, as it was taken from a cost and time constraints of the then current Series 105 Sedan / Sport Coupe ( Giulia GTJ and GTV ). The interior was very comprehensive for conditions at that time. Despite the origin of the motor racing sport of Montreal acquired in automobile racing, due to the rather simple chassis no meaning.

The car was offered in 1975 without accessories in Germany at a list price of DM 35,000, which represents inflation-adjusted 45,900 euros today. The first oil crisis in 1973/74 impeded the commercial success of Montreal, as he had a rather high fuel consumption. Unlike many other Alfa types from the 1970s, a much better rust prevention was operated at Montreal, so that to this day are still numerous Montreal to the delight of the owner in a roadworthy or even well- maintained condition.

The Montreal was sold from November 1970 to February 1977. A total of only 3917 vehicles were produced, other sources also call 3925 pieces. As of July 1, 1993 139 cars of the Alfa Romeo Montreal in Germany at the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA ) were reported.
