Alfonso Caso

Alfonso Caso y Andrade ( born 1 February 1896 in Mexico City; † November 30, 1970 ) was a Mexican archaeologist and Rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México ( UNAM). He lent his hand in his homeland in the field of pre-Columbian studies and was of the view that the systematic study of the pre-Columbian civilization for understanding the cultural roots of Mexico mattered to them.

Biography

Caso, who belongs to the " generation of 1915 ", first studied at the Escuela Nacional de Jurisprudencia, graduated in 1918 in philosophy and was a lawyer from 1919, according to another study at the Escuela Nacional de Altos Estudios 1925 archaeologist.

Starting from 1918 he also taught various subjects at these universities or with their assignment as faculties of UNAM and at the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia ( ENAH ), 1918-1928 epistemology and to 1939 Philosophy of Law, 1929-1943 Mexican archeology and 1930-1933 General Ethnology. Among other things, he was from 1930 director of the Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales, 1933-1934 Head of Departao Arqueología de Historia y etnografia and from 1939 to 1944 director of the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia ( INAH ). In the meantime, he headed from 1931 to 1943 archaeological investigations in the region around Monte Albán. On April 8, 1943, he became a member of the Colegio Nacional. From 1944 to 1945 he was rector of the UNAM. Under his leadership, the University adopted the Organic Law (Ley Orgánica ) with which the autonomy of the university was established. From 1947 to 1949 he was Minister of National Goods and administrative inspection. He was co-founder of the Instituto Nacional Indigenista, the predecessor institution of the Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos indigenous, and headed the Institute as Director 1949 to 1970.

Caso published several works on Mesoamerican indigenous peoples and was awarded the National Sciences Tens price.
