Alfred Gilks

Alfred Gilks ​​( born December 29, 1891 in California, † September 6, 1970 in Hollywood) was an American cinematographer who was honored in 1952 for An American in Paris Best Cinematography with the Oscar.

Gilks ​​worked from 1920 as director of photography and stood until 1928 at about 40 silent films behind the camera. In the transition to talkies, he was able to continue his career until 1939 seamlessly and turned during this period included two films of the Dr. Kildare series.

In 1947 he continued his work. By 1956, his best-known films were made. For Vincente Minnelli's An American in Paris, he was honored in 1952 with John Alton with the Oscar for Best Cinematography. After winning the Oscars he did not work more often as a cameraman. The last film in which he was involved, is John Ford's The Searchers as part of the second unit.
