Alfred Malherbe

Alfred Malherbe (* July 14 1804 Fort Saint Louis to Martinique; † August 14, 1865 in Metz) was a French judge and naturalist.

Life and work

After studying law, he was judge in 1832 in Metz. In the following years, he was appointed Vice- President of the Court.

He developed very early a passion for nature and began a recreational study of botany, zoology, and especially ornithology. He published an extensive treatise on woodpeckers entitled " Monograph of picidées " (1859-1862), published in four volumes. Of these books, 120 copies were printed. Here birds are described in terms of hand-colored lithographs. He studied the birds of Algeria and Sicily, and was director of the Museum of Metz and President of the " Natural History Society " of Metz from 1844 until his death.

Dedikationsnamen

1851 named Jules Verreaux and Verreaux Édouard the Malherbetaube (Columba malherbii ). The Malherbesittich ( Cyanoramphus malherbi ) was dedicated to him in 1857 by Charles de Souancé. George Robert Gray described a subspecies of the Black-throated woodpecker under the name Campephilus melanoleucos malherbii. In the English literature one finds for this subspecies occasionally the trivial names Malherbe 's Woodpecker or Malherbe 's Ivory -billed Woodpecker. The Desert Gold Woodpecker Colaptes chrysoides chrysoides ( Malherbe, 1852) contributes to some authors the English common name Malherbe 's Flicker and a subspecies of the Sultan woodpecker, Chrysocolaptes lucidus Chersonesus ( Kloss, 1918) is referred to as Malherbe 's Golden - backed Woodpecker.
