Alfred Mele

Alfred Remen Mele ( May 22nd 1951) is an American philosopher.

He is William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University. His research interests are action theory, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and philosophy of antiquity. For the free will he has developed his own position, which he calls " Agnostic Autonomism ".

Autonomy and free will

Mele holds free will than autonomy and believes that people can have this. He developed this two concepts of autonomy - a kompatibilistisches that also works in a deterministic world view, and a "modest libertarisches ," based on an indeterministic worldview. Mele argues that so far did not have to decide between compatibilism and Inkompatiblismus in to affirm autonomy and can therefore proposes an agnostic attitude.

In "Effective Intentions: The Power of Conscious Will" (2009) he analyzes its support from empirical findings from neuroscience arguments against the free will with the final Conclusion that this is threatened by any of the available evidence.

In " Free Will and Luck " (2006) he defended his conception of free will against the relevant theoretical arguments.
