Alfred Rupert Hall

Alfred Rupert Hall ( born July 26, 1920 in Basford, England; † 5 February 2009) was a British historian of science.

Life and work

Rupert Hall was Assistant Lecturer in 1950 and 1953 to 1959 Lecturer in the History of Science in Cambridge. From the lectures showed his well-known book "The Scientific Revolution 1500-1800 " by 1954. At that time he began intensively the papers of Isaac Newton to study in the university archives. At Cambridge he met his future wife (marriage in 1959 ) Marie Boas Hall know that explored the science historian at Cambridge from 1951 the estate of Robert Boyle. Together they went to UCLA in 1957, 1961 to the Indiana University and from 1963 to the Imperial College, where they both retired in 1980. Both died in quick succession in February 2009.

In 1958, the Whipple Museum established at his suggestion at the University of Cambridge, the first curator he was. He was assisted by Joseph Needham. With attached library, it became a center for science historian at Cambridge.

Hall dealt mainly with the " Scientific Revolution " of the 17th century ( a term he coined in his book of 1954 ), especially with Isaac Newton, whose biography he wrote.

With his second wife, Marie Boas Hall, he gave 1962 unpublished works of Isaac Newton out. In the 1970s, he was co-editor of the correspondence between Newton. He was also with his wife, editor of the extensive correspondence of the secretary of the Royal Society Henry Oldenbourg (from 1965 to 1986 in 13 volumes ).

In 1981, he received with his wife the George Sarton Medal.
